Synapses - gaps between neurons that allow each nerve cell to transmit signals to another - control the flow of information between neurons. They do so by differentially recruiting, recycling and positioning certain molecular components in their structure. Understanding how synapses regulate this flow of information is key to understanding how the brain functions. Dr. Deepak Nair's lab approaches this problem by studying the organization and dynamics of key synaptic molecules using a variety of interdisciplinary approaches. The lab also aims to develop cutting-edge microscopy and optogenetic tools to observe synapses at the nanoscale and in real-time.
